How to remove horrible odours from your home

$

Have you ever been surprised by a random bad smell in your home? Here is a guide to identifying and removing bad odours.

There are some odours which are quiet and unassuming. They lay dormant, subtly wafting, occasionally making themselves known to the sensors in your nostrils. “Did you smell that? Sniff, sniff*”…then it’s gone…. Then there are some which are like a brass brand alarm clock. Loud, proud and in your face. There’s no walking away from these ones.

Whatever the smell, when you’re presented with one in your home, it can be frustrating. Sometimes horrifying. Especially when the cause isn’t an obvious one. We look at the most common odour causing culprits and how to deal with them.

Old home smell

It’s the musty smell we associate with older houses. It smells like your grandpa’s old tweed jacket that’s been in the trunk for too long. This can mean mould or damp issues, caused by several things. Whatever it is, you should most definitely find it as some types of moulds can be toxic.

  • First find where the mould is living. If it’s not identifiable immediately it could be in your walls. If this is the case you’ll need to hire a professional to carry out a mould inspection. On top of the smell, cracked or peeling paint, bulging walls or discolouration are all signs there could be moisture in your walls.
  • If the signs are more obvious and superficial, there are certain steps you can take yourself to clean. Remove wet or damaged goods. If it’s in the carpet then it’s best to just rip it up and start again. Then clean with a strong cleaner, making sure to wear a mask and gloves. Next deodorize and ventilate the area to dry it. Opening the windows on a nice bright, breezy day should suffice. When finished, make sure the source of the dampness is fixed i.e. a leaky pipe or bathtub.

Foul stench in your kitchen/bathroom

woman doing the dishes in her kitchen

You could have mildew in your sink pipes. Attracted to dank, dark places, the sink hole is the ideal habitat for the spores to spread. If left undetected it can cause a very unpleasant odour.

  • The good news is this is relevantly easy and quick to fix. You can buy drain cleaners from the supermarket or hardware store. Or, if you’re looking for a more environmentally friendly solution, use a funnel, ½ cup of baking soda and 1 cup of distilled white vinegar.
  • Use the funnel to pour the baking soda down the drain, next add the vinegar and when the materials combine they’ll cause a frothy, mildly abrasive compound. Leave for 15 minutes, run hot water for 1 minute, leave for another 5 minutes and then run cold water. Voila, the smell should be eliminated.

Dirty dishwasher

It’s easy to forget that something in charge of washing, actually needs to be washed. There are a couple of things you can do regularly to ensure your dishwasher remains fresh and clean:

  • Run the dishwasher empty with some vinegar regularly, to keep it clean and fresh.
  • Clean the drain filter – it’s the round, detachable filter at the bottom of the machine. This is where all the food particles collect. Remove the bottom rack, take out the filter and wash with hot soapy water.
  • Wash the inside of the door, walls and seals – Remove all the racks, then use a cloth or brush with some hot soapy water to scrub out the interior and inside the seals.
  • Wash the racks – although the least likely cause of the odour, it’s good to wash these now and again.

Something smells like a sewer

If you smell something that aligns with rotten eggs, chances are there’s sewage gas emitting from your pipes. Caused by a mix of methane and bacteria, this is not only unpleasant, it can be a danger to your health. There are many reasons why the smell is lingering such as a clogged drain, rotted or cracked pipes, loose-fitting pipe connections, a stopped-up or too-short vent pipe, a dry tap, or the toilet’s wax ring is old. Because of the health implications, as soon as you start to smell something it’s best to call in the professionals.

Dyson V8 Absolute+ handheld vacuum review

No one thinks vacuuming is actually fun, but it can be quick and easy – provided you choose the right tool for the job. Dyson has been at the forefront of vacuum cleaner technology since it began with the world’s first bagless vacuum. Let’s explore its latest showstopping design – the V8 Absolute+ handheld vacuum.

What is the Dyson V8 Absolute+ vacuum?

V8 Absolute+ stick vacuum

Dyson’s most powerful cord-free stick vacuum cleaner is the Dyson V8, which comes in three different packages. The Dyson V8 Absolute+ is the latest package, including the full set of add-ons available. It’s the top of the range for the already high-end vacuum line.

What makes the Dyson V8 Absolute+ stand out?

The V8 vacuum range is built around Dyson’s latest and most powerful digital motor. It’s powered by a lithium-ion battery – offering up to 40 minutes of fade-free suction, or 25 minutes when you use the motorised floor tool. Fifteen cyclones – arranged in two tiers – work together to increase airflow and capture fine dust. Suction power can be increased or decreased depending on how much suction power you need (and whether you feel like lifting up the rug with the vacuum) by sliding the power mode switch. Air passes through a HEPA filter before being released from the vacuum cleaner, ensuring that no allergens can escape and persist in the air inside your home.

The docking station is wall-mounted, so the vacuum charges while stored. The dock also holds additional attachments, for easy access. Like all Dyson cord-free vacuums, the V8 converts easily into a handheld vacuum for quick clean-ups and spot cleaning.

What accessories are included with the Dyson V8 Absolute+?

Dyson Accessories

Apart from the vacuum itself, the Dyson V8 Absolute box contains the following components and add-ons:

  • Docking station
  • Soft roller cleaner head (for removing both large debris and fine dust from hard floors)
  • Direct drive cleaner head (drives bristles deep into carpet to help lift out ground-in dirt)
  • Combination tool
  • Rigid crevice tool
  • Mini soft dusting brush (for removing dust from delicate surfaces such as laptops, coffee tables, and dashboards)
  • Mini motorised tool (for removing fine dust from sofas, mattresses, car seats and other soft furnishings)
  • V8 extension hose (for getting into difficult to reach places, e.g. under car seats)
  • V8 mattress tool
  • V8 flexi crevice tool (for getting into narrow spaces, e.g. behind the fridge)
  • V8 up-top adaptor (for vacuuming surfaces up high, e.g. the top of wardrobes or ceiling fans)
  • V8 accessory tool bag

What’s the difference between the Dyson V8 Absolute and the Absolute+?

The difference between these two Dyson V8 products is around $100 on the price tag, and the list of accessories included. The Absolute does not include the extension hose, mattress tool, accessory bag, flexi crevice tool, or up top adaptor.

Does the Dyson V8 Absolute+ require much maintenance?

Dyson Vacuum Cleaner Cleaning

As a bagless vacuum, it needs to be emptied directly into a bin once full. Stick vacuum cleaners have a smaller capacity than barrel types, so they do need to be emptied more frequently. The nozzles and accessories should also be cleaned out regularly to prevent the accumulation of any gunk or potential blockages. The filter is designed to be washable and to last the lifetime of the vacuum cleaner.

The user manual includes simple instructions for keeping your Dyson kit clean.

How much does the Dyson V8 Absolute+ cost?

Given that Dyson is a premium vacuum brand, it will come as little surprise that its top products come with a heavy price tag. The Dyson V8 Absolute+ carries a recommended retail price of $999. Keep an eye out for sales from retailers if you want to shave a bit off that figure, however as the newest model to hit the shelves you may be waiting a while if you’re looking to snag a bargain.

Miele ArtLine Kitchen Appliances Review

As sleek and modern as your benchtops and cabinetry might be, a loud and ugly cooktop can ruin your kitchen’s overall look. Integrated kitchen appliances are designed to smoothly blend in with their surroundings, and one brand leading the way in combining clean and modern aesthetics with high-end functionality is Miele with its ‘ArtLine’ appliance portfolio.

Miele ArtLine appliances look simple. Deceptively so. Behind their smooth, minimalistic exterior, each appliance contains extensive functionality and customisability, packaged to be made as easy to use as possible. Let’s explore what the ArtLine range does differently.

Miele ArtLine Kitchen

What is the Miele ArtLine range?

ArtLine is a range of high-end fully integrated kitchen appliances by Miele, including ovens, induction cooktops, refrigerators and coffee machines. ArtLine appliances are highly automated. Handles on ovens are replaced with the Touch2Open system, where a light touch on the integrated sensor button prompts the appliance to open automatically. The SoftOpen design guides the door to open gently until it has reached its final position. There are no more manual dials and buttons – everything is controlled by touch buttons and screens.

The streamlined functions are complemented with a choice of two modern exterior finishes – graphite grey and obsidian black. ArtLine is a designer range for kitchens that go beyond the function and are all about aesthetics and experience.

Miele ArtLine ovens

ArtLine oven

Covering three different kinds of ovens, Miele ArtLine ovens all share the following features in common:

  • Electronic sensors to monitor and control temperature
  • Save frequently used settings for one-touch cooking of particular dishes
  • Automatic programs for different cooking applications
  • Timer with programmable start and end times
  • Surfaces remain cool, so there’s no need to worry about burns
  • Safety lock, plus automatic switch off if the maximum operating time exceeded

Standard ovens

Two different models of standard ovens are offered in the ArtLine range. Both the H6461BPX and H6860BPX include pyrolytic cleaning, residual heat utilisation (for improved energy efficiency), and the Moisture Plus Function, which adds extra bursts of steam during cooking to ensure meat is tender and bread tastes bakery-fresh.

The higher-tier H6860BPX adds in a few more features:

  • Wireless food probe to monitor core temperature
  • AirClean catalyser, which removes odours and grease from cooking vapours before they’re released into your kitchen
  • Crisp function
  • Fully extendable runners

Microwave combination ovens

These combine microwave and oven functions into one appliance – saving you space and even time, such as when you want to quickly heat up then crisp food. You could get the very best of both types of cooking without the hassle of shuffling dishes in between two different appliances. Miele produces two microwave combination ovens in the ArtLine range. Both have a stainless steel inner cabinet with the Miele non-stick PerfectClean finish for scratch resistance and easier cleaning. There’s also a popcorn button – because it’s an absolute necessity for a movie night at home. The higher tier model adds in a food probe to monitor your cooking process without supervision.

Steam combination ovens

The Miele ArtLine steam combination oven adds in steam functions to your oven – injecting bursts of steam in a controlled environment designed to produce your dishes exactly the way you want them. It includes a number of convenient features such as a keep warm function, so it can stay ready to serve for longer, and a number of automatic programs for different types of dishes. The motorised fascia panel lifts up to reveal the water container, condensate container and wireless food probe for easy refilling and removal. You can also cook more at once with up to three levels.

Miele ArtLine induction cooktops

ArtLine induction cooktop

While induction cooktops are already growing in popularity thanks to their relative safety, efficiency, ease of cleaning and modern look, the Miele ArtLine range takes the look a step further. The ArtLine induction cooktop models are designed to fit completely flush with the benchtop for a seamless kitchen surface. Each of the three different models has a different coloured finish; white, black, and graphite black. Apart from the expected features of a good induction cooktop – automatic switch-off when no cookware is in place, central ‘stop’ button, and ceramic glass surface – there are a few particularly notable features found in Miele ArtLine induction cooktops:

  • Safety lock, so you (or exploring children) can’t accidentally switch it on
  • Overheating and spill protection, which automatically switches off the heating element if extreme use leads to excessive heat or if a spill occurs
  • Miele ‘Con@ctivity 2.0’ wireless communication between the rangehood and the hob, to automatically adjust extraction power settings of the rangehood and switches it on and off based on hob activity
  • ‘PowerFlex’ cooking zones which can accommodate large and unusually sized cookware
  • Residual heat indicator, so you know if a surface is safe to touch or place items on
  • Keep Warm, Stop, and auto heat-up functions
  • Touch controls, with individual power and timer controls for each cooking zone

Miele ArtLine refrigerators

There are two fridge-freezer configurations available in the Miele ArtLine range – single fridge or freezer units (which can be pigeon-paired together) and bottom-mounted fridge-freezer units (i.e. the freezer is on the bottom). All refrigerators include individually adjustable glass shelf lighting, dynamic cooling with ventilator to distribute cool air, and door shelves which can be cleaned in the dishwasher.

As with the entire ArtLine range, the doors are ‘SoftClose’, meaning they gently self-close so there’s no accidental slamming of doors. Freezers are frost-free with removable clear drawers. Some models also include a fully automatic ice maker which works with a mains water connection or from the built-in water tank. Miele ArtLine refrigerators are all networked with the Miele@home smartphone app. This app can be used to diagnose issues and control functions.

Miele ArtLine coffee machines

Nothing is more luxurious than having your coffee machine built into your cabinetry. Plus, it looks much neater than having a big appliance taking up counter space. There are two models of built-in coffee machines in the Miele ArtLine range – the CVA 6401 and CVA 6805. The CVA 6401 comes in a graphite grey finish, while the CVA 6805 comes in a choice of graphite grey or obsidian black finish. Both models include the following features:

  • Fully digital programming (including espresso, coffee, long coffee, cappuccino, cafe latte and latte macchiato)
  • Coffee pot function for brewing up to eight cups of coffee
  • Double nozzle, with every program available as a single or double serve
  • Up to 10 different user profiles
  • Simple click-in milk system
  • Ground coffee chute in addition to the bean container, so a different type of coffee can be used without emptying out the bean container
  • Bean container, water container, waste container and drip tray all hidden from view behind the easy access door
  • Automatic machine rinse after making coffee with milk, to prevent build-up and keep pipes clear and fresh
  • Cleaning programmes, for minimal hands-on cleaning
  • Timer functions mean you can have your coffee freshly brewed right as you wake up. Timer also automatically switches off the machine in the evening and after it hasn’t been used in a long time

The higher tier model, the CVA 6805, includes the following upgrades:

  • Automatic cup height sensor, with a central spout which adjusts height accordingly
  • Built-in cup warmer drawer, which starts half an hour before the scheduled switch on time
  • System lock, to prevent unintentional use such as by curious children

How much do Miele ArtLine products cost?

If you’re looking to buy one ArtLine product, you may be looking to buy one of everything – since the idea is to create a seamless designer kitchen. The below table lists the recommended retail price range for each product type:

Product RRP Range
Refrigerator (fridge + freezer) $3,999 – $6,998
Oven $4,599 – $7,599
Induction cooktop $3,599 – $4,499
Coffee machine $4,999 – $6,499

Source: Miele

This means that kitting out your kitchen with one of each of the full set of Miele ArtLine appliances could cost you anywhere between $17,196 and $25,595. That’s without considering other necessities, such as a separate microwave and a dishwasher.

Should I buy Miele ArtLine appliances?

The ArtLine appliances are designed for creating a seamlessly smooth look with high end appliances. As these are high quality, high price installations, you will likely be combining these with quite a significant kitchen renovation. These are not the kinds of products you buy on a whim.

If you’re looking to upgrade to a top-notch kitchen with fully integrated appliances, it may be worth looking into the Miele ArtLine range. However, for many of us these kinds of products are priced out of our reach. You may be better off finding a lower-priced compromise between your dream kitchen and reality.

Dyson Vs Shark Vacuum Cleaners

Dyson and Shark are two of the biggest and most popular brands in the world of sucking up dust and dirt from your floors, but which really offers the best vacuum cleaners and the best value for money? To help you decide, Canstar Blue has produced this comparison of their vacuum cleaners large and small, paying close attention to their sucking power, features, accessories and prices.

Both Dyson and Shark boast innovative features, but which comes out on top? Read on to find out as we compare the standout appliances from each brand.

Dyson Vacuums

Dyson has a well-regarded reputation with a number of futuristic vacuum designs, aiming to make them more exciting than household appliances really are. Its vacuums are separated into three categories – cord-free vacuums, upright vacuums and barrel vacuums.

Dyson Ball Animal Dyson Ball Animal

The iconic Dyson Ball vacuum is an upright style vacuum, providing 270 Air Watts of suction power. It’s designed with a spherical roller and cyclonic separation tubes around the main airflow section to intake maximum air pressure. The rolling ball design allows for easy movability into tight spaces. The cleaning head itself has a self-adjusting base plate to adjust to the surface being cleaned, allowing for optimal suction. The upgraded brush bar has 25% more power than the previous model. With this vacuum you will also find an instant release hose, which allows you to vacuum stairs without needing to tug the whole vacuum with you up the stairs.

Another specific feature you will find with this model is Dyson’s ‘Tangle-Free Turbine tool’, which is a useful function if you have pets as the counter-rotating head is claimed to not have hair tangle around the brush bar. It is further claimed to capture allergens and expel cleaner air.  It weighs 11.19kg and has a 10.7m cord length.

  • RRP: $799

There are two other options in this range, including the Small Ball Multi Floor option, which is a more compact version for easier storage. It weighs 5.5kg and has RRP of $599. The Dyson Small Ball Allergy, specific for capturing allergens and deep cleaning floors, comes in at $699.

Dyson v8 CordlessDyson v8 Cordless

This is a cord free, versatile vacuum with a compact design, handheld electronic motor and two tiers of cyclone chambers being claimed to deliver most powerful suction. Dyson boasts inbuilt batteries, which provide twice the runtime. It is also claimed to have had acoustic improvements for a quieter machine with the same amount of suction.

  • RRP: $399 – $999 (depending on model)

Dyson Cinetic Big Ball and Dyson Big Ball

The barrel style vacuum is Dyson’s largest and most powerful vacuum. Its spherical barrel design gets back into a self-right position whenever it’s knocked over. It has two tiers of radial cyclone generators for maximum suction as well as to help loosen microscopic particles. It’s equipped with a self adjusting standard head plus a few other tools for a number of cleaning needs. The 360-degree extendable handle also makes it a very ergonomic vacuum.

  • RRP: $499 – $999 (depending on model)

Shark Vacuums

Shark has a slightly more modest range of vacuum cleaners compared to Dyson, but what it lacks in quantity it more than makes up for in quality. Although Shark doesn’t produce cordless vacuums, this range is on its way, to be released in 2018. The full range currently extends to the following models:

  • Shark Powered Lift Away with Duo-Clean Rotator Bagless Corded Vacuum
  • Shark Lift-Away Rotator Bagless 850W Corded Vacuum
  • Shark Lift-Away Rotator Bagless Corded Vacuum
  • Shark DuoClean Upright Bagless Corded Vacuum
  • Shark Rocket True Pet Upright Bagless 500W Corded Vacuum
  • Shark Lift-Away Rotator Bagless 750W Corded Vacuum

Let’s look at arguably the two standout models.

Shark Lift-Away Rotator Bagless 750W

This Shark upright vacuum is claimed to be lightweight with enhanced swivel steering for cleaning around and under furniture. It’s a “lift around” vacuum to help clean staircases or high areas. With the anti-Allergen Complete Seal Technology it is claimed that there is no loss of suction. Shark’s HEPA filtration system also aims to capture and hold 99.9% of dust and allergens inside the vacuum.

The Shark Lift-Away Rotator vacuum provides 740W of suction power, which differs to the Air Watts measurement that Dyson vacuums boast, so don’t be fooled by this large spike in numbers. It’s simply a different type of calculation, which may ultimately confuse consumers even more.  At time of writing this model was approximately $299 from leading retailers.

Shark Rocket True Pet Handstick

Shark Rocket True Pet Handstick This is a corded 500W vacuum with a 9m cord length. Although some may find cordless vacuums convenient to use, the downfall is the operating time. Unlike battery-operated versions, Shark boasts the corded Handstick design to never run out of power while maintaining a light weight, 4kg in total. At the time of writing the price was approximately $399 from leading retailers.

Dyson Vs Shark | Who offers the best value for money?

There are several factors to consider before purchasing either a Dyson or a Shark vacuum cleaner. These include:

  • The effectiveness of the clean the vacuum
  • Ease of use and storage of the vacuum
  • Noise levels of the vacuum cleaner

Dyson offers a large range of vacuum cleaners to suit any home and it certainly boasts innovative features as well as modern designs that stand out. You may find that Dyson sits higher on the price spectrum, but this is not to say that Shark doesn’t scratch up with its features. If you’re on a budget, Shark vacuum cleaners will be up to the task.

While Dyson tends to provide a compact design with its vacuums for easy storage, Shark offers simple designs for ease of use, as well as advancing in technology for noise reduction. Depending how you use your vacuum and if you need specific features such as the ability to vacuum high ceilings, you may like to choose accordingly. Via the link below, you can find how Aussie consumers rated the two brands along with the other top vacuum cleaner brands.

Do cheap vacuum cleaners really suck?

$

The vacuum cleaner is an essential part of the home whether you like it or not, but can a cheap vacuum cleaner do the job perfectly fine without the hefty price tag? To help you find a great deal on a new vacuum, we’ve reviewed some of the most appealing cheap models on the market, whether you’re looking for an upright, bagged, bagless, corded or cordless vacuum cleaner.

Cheap Upright Vacuum Cleaners

The benefit of upright vacuum cleaners is that you won’t need to tug around a bulky canister as its design is a compact upright stick. The downfall, however, is that you won’t find very many upright vacuum cleaners under $200 as most brands tend to pack a number of features, increasing its price.

Kmart 1200W Upright Vacuum Kmart 1200W Upright Vacuum

  • Purchase price: $89

Cheap Bagged Barrel Vacuum Cleaners

There aren’t many bagged barrel vacuums around anymore as they are being replaced with bagless designs, saving you money long term without the need to purchase new vacuum bags every time. On the other hand, bagless vacuums may spill more easily compared to vacuum bags, leaving the bagged option a convenient alternative where you simply throw away the whole bag without the mess. Vacuum bags also tend to be larger in size compared to a dust bin, allowing you to vacuum for longer without emptying the vacuum as often.

Cheap Bagless Barrel Vacuum Cleaners

Bagless vacuum cleaners are equipped with modern technology and have a see-through design that can help spot items that were accidently vacuumed up, like your wedding ring. A con of this type of vacuum is that they require cleaning of the main filter, which may also need replacing overtime.

Should I buy a cheap vacuum cleaner?

Most cheap vacuum cleaners are entry level without any extra features or technology. It’s probably fair to say that they won’t last you as long as more expensive models, especially the cordless stick vacuums and handheld appliances as these may have a shorter battery life and weak suction power.

Another aspect to consider is the noise level, with many cheap vacuums not offering any noise reduction technology to provide a quite operation. It’s also important to note the material build of the vacuums especially if you tend to knock your vacuums over when pulling them.

Nevertheless, if you are on a budget, one of these models may suffice for your home. Whether it be a simple handheld or a bagless barrel vacuum, you may still gain good use of these vacuums. For brand comparison, follow the link bellow to see how Aussies rated a number of vacuum cleaner brands.

Good vacuum cleaners for your car

$

Getting the car cleaned is a tedious task and it can also take a large chunk out of your day. The most convenient vacuums to use in your car are handheld and cord-free handstick vacuums. But which are really up to the job? The last thing you’ll want is a vacuum that will ‘drive’ you crazy! In this article, we review vacuum cleaners for your car to help you pick the best for your needs and budget.

Dyson V8 Absolute+

Dyson V8 Absolute+ At the high end of the price spectrum, you will find the Dyson V8 absolute+. It’s an all-round vacuum claimed to be ideal for cars, boats, caravans as well as your home, and for the price tag, you’d hope it can do it all.

This Dyson vacuum is a portable cord-free design, featuring a 0.54L dust container with an HEPA filtration system to capture dust and allergens. Its V8 motor is claimed to provide 150% more rotating brush power compared to the Dyson V6 and is 50% quieter. It uses a high capacity lithium-ion battery that is claimed to deliver up to 40 minutes of fade-free suction or 25 minutes with the motorised floor tool. There are a number of tools featured with this model including a crevice tool, soft dusting brush, soft roller cleaner and a mini motorized brush to remove pet hair and stubborn dirt from car floor mats.

The main benefits of this vacuum are the increased power and battery life compared to the previous model as well as the HEPA filtration system. The downside is its price tag but you can find the previous model – the Dyson V6 – for a lower price, still featuring similar accessories and technology but with less power and shorter battery life.

  • RRP: $999

Bosch 21.6V Readyy’y 2-in-1 Lithium Ion – BBHL2214AU

Bosch 21.6V Readyy’y 2-in-1 Lithium Ion – BBHL2214AU A car vacuum cleaner in the mid-price range is the Bosh Readyy’y 2-in-1 vacuum. This cordless model provides dual functionality with its ability to be used as a handstick vacuum as well as a rechargeable handheld vacuum, which can be quickly detached and used for small areas.

Similarly to the Dyson V8 mentioned above, this vacuum uses a lithium-ion battery, claimed to provide high performance, short charging time and long battery life. It is claimed to provide up to 45 minutes of run time and require 4 to 5 hours of charging time. Bosch also boasts an aerodynamic long life motor and a three-stage electronic protection system aimed to prevent overcharging, overheating and deep discharge of the batteries. The 21.6V battery has 2 performance levels:

  • Level 1 – normal cleaning tasks and maximum runtime
  • Level 2 – difficult cleaning tasks and shorter runtime

It features a detachable EasyClean roller brush with specially engineered grooves that allow you to cut away tangled hair with scissors, which the vacuum then sucks up without you needing to pick them out by hand. It is a fairly lightweight model, 2.6kg in total, and has a 0.4L dust container capacity. Several other design elements include a flexible nozzle joint, freestanding function and a hygienic filter claimed for clean exhaust air.

  • RRP: $399

Hoover 12V Wet & Dry HandiVac

Hoover 12V Wet & Dry HandiVac For a handheld car vacuum cleaner under $100, the Hoover 12V HandiVac allows you to clean up basic messes and spills. Its wet and dry functionality is a fairly standard feature for handheld vacuum cleaners, but its compact design allows you to vacuum all throughout the car with several additional attachments included – a crevice tool and a squeegee tool for wet pickup. Besides that, you won’t find any other extraordinary features with this model, but for the price it may suffice.

It uses a 12V battery for suction power and has a 1 year warranty. When cleaning the car ashtray, it’s noted to have all contents fully extinguished before vacuuming to avoid flair ups and this goes for all vacuum cleaners.

  • RRP: $79

Black & Decker 12V DC Dustbuster Flexi Car Vacuum – PD1200AV

Black & Decker 12V DC Dustbuster Flexi Car Vacuum – PD1200AV The Black & Decker 12V Car Vacuum has dual functionality so you can use it like a traditional handstick vacuum or a removable handheld, which helps to clean hard to reach areas. This vacuum is specifically designed for car use with its 12V car power adaptor so you can throw it in the back of the boot and keep it around for when you accidently spill a packet of chips.

The 0.56L transparent dustbowl allows you to see when the vacuum needs to be emptied. Its side empty door is claimed to be an easy to empty system to ensure all dirt goes straight into the bin without mess. It features a crevice attachment and soft brush in one tool with a storage bag to keep all the accessories in one place. The integrated hose is said to allow you to reach all areas where other handheld vacuums can’t. Additionally, it has cable storage for you to wrap around the 5m cable before storing.

With this car vacuum, Black & Decker boasts cyclonic action to spin dirt away from the filter and help to maintain its powerful suction power. It’s claimed to be designed with a triple action filtration system for performance and long lasting vacuuming, along with a filter cleaning wheel for easy and hands free cleaning of the filter.

  • RRP: $80

Black & Decker 12V Dustbuster Auto Car Vacuum with Accessory Kit – NV1210AV

Black & Decker 12V Dustbuster Auto Car Vacuum with Accessory Kit – NV1210AVAnother car vacuum cleaner from Black & Decker is the 12V Dustbuster Auto Car Vacuum, also fitted for a car power adaptor. It’s claimed to have a comfortable ergonomic design, featuring a 5m cable. Several attachments included are a flexible hose, a push in crevice tool, an accessory adaptor, large upholstery brush and push in brush. The long crevice tool is claimed to be useful for cleaning underneath car seats. Both the crevice tool and brush can be stored on board.

This model does not feature the cyclonic action system that is available in the above model; instead it uses a double action filtration system also designed for performance and durability. It has a slightly smaller dustbowl capacity, coming in at 0.37L. At the time of writing, it also ranged from $70 to $90 from major retailers.

Kmart 12V Wet & Dry Vacuum Cleaner

Kmart 12V Wet & Dry Vacuum CleanerFor a cheap alternative, you may like to consider the Kmart handheld car vacuum cleaner. It features the benefits of cleaning both wet and dry mess and is apparently ideal for the interior of your car with a 12V lighter socket plug. Kmart states it’s tested to Australian electrical standards.

Similarly to some other models above, it includes a crevice and brush tool. Although it’s a simple design, it may be handy to keep in the car for those occasional spills, especially on road trips. You’d do very well to find a cheaper vacuum cleaner than this – even ALDI would struggle to match this price.

  • RRP: $12

Should I invest in a car vacuum cleaner?

Instead of lugging around a barrel vacuum and getting the extension cords out every time you need or want to give your car a good clean, a compact handstick or handheld car vacuum cleaner will certainly prove a convenient option. But there can be a huge difference in quality between car vacuum cleaners, as the prices mentioned above illustrate. For a car vacuum that won’t drive you crazy, pay attention to:

  • Its suction power
  • The charge length
  • Its battery life
  • Extra attachments

The addition of having a specifically designed car power adaptor – such as on the Black & Decker 12V Dustbuster Auto Car Vacuum – removes the need to drive your car as close as possible to a power point to plug in your vacuum. Whether you strictly maintain a spotless car – or it’s a complete mess in a day – there is certainly merit to buying a good car vacuum and plenty of options out there for you to consider.

A guide to twin tub washing machines

$

You can now say goodbye to the never ending piles of dirty clothes, with a new era of twin tub washing machines coming your way. These are fairly new to the market, advancing from the traditional twin tub structure with larger capacity drums. But are they worth the extra money? Follow our guide to find out all you need to learn about these duo drum machines and if they are is the best choice for you.

Why buy a twin tub washing machine?

Enormous piles of washing at the end of the week can take its toll on your day off when you’re waiting at home just to get the second load on. A twin tub washing machine is a convenient way to save you time as well as space, with most twin tubs stacking one on top of the other. By combining two tubs into one appliance it can also be a more affordable option than buying a second washing machine for your household.

It may not be very practical to have two separate washers in one laundry room, so buying a two-in-one washer could also be a handy way to separate whites from colours or simply run a small wash of delicate or wool items without waiting for a full load to pile up.

How does a twin tub washing machine work?

As the name implies, these appliances are designed with two tubs, usually with two different capacity limits – one slightly less than the other. Depending on the model, the larger capacity front load washer is designed for normal loads, in particular heavily soiled items allowing for both hot and cold washes. The smaller washer – located either at the top or bottom of the machine – is used for lightly soiled items as well as specialty loads and is usually a cold only wash cycle.

There is also an older generation of twin tub washing machines that work in a slightly different manner. These are normally divided into two parts – with side being the wash tub and the other side designed to spin your clothes, removing moisture in order to use less time on the drying line. You need to fill the appliance with water manually, which may be a downfall but it does mean you choose how much water goes in, being ideal for water-restricted suburbs. The water also doesn’t drain automatically, allowing you to recycle the water – for your garden.

Can you use both tubs at the same time?

The duo tub washing machines are boasted to wash simultaneously. Weather you have a pile of whites or baby clothes that require being washed separately, these washing machines can work at the same time with separate wash cycles and washing detergents.

How energy efficient are twin tub washing machines?

While larger capacity units tend to increases energy consumption, the latest dual tub washing machines typically boast four stars and up for the energy star ratings. With the design of a smaller capacity drum, you can wash a small load without the energy consumption of a large capacity drum, which is a plus. High spin speeds on certain models also help to save on energy costs by decreasing the time the washer is in use.

Who sells twin tub washing machines?

LG Dual Washer Dryers

LG produces two models of twin load washing machines – the Signature TWINWash 10kg/6kg Washer Dryer Combo (Pictured) and the LG TWINWash 18.5kg Total Washing Load.  These tend to look more like fridges rather than washing machines, with the bottom compartment being designed to slide out in a similar way to a freezer. The LG Signature model has 4.5 stars for both energy and WELS star ratings. It also has a maximum spin speed of 1,600 RPM, giving a powerful appliance for a household of 5+.

The LG TWINWash Dual Washer Dryer Combo (TWIN171216T) has a 16kg capacity main drum (hot/cold) with a 1,000 RPM spin speed and a 2.5kg mini washer (cold only) at the bottom. When switching to the dryer selection, it allows a 9kg load. Several key features of this model include a pause and add option, in case you need to throw something else in. It’s also boasted for the LG Turbo Clean system, shortening the wash cycle by using short burst of water spray from nozzles located at the front of the drum.

This new era of washing machines also allows you to control the machine from the palm of your hands – via a smartphone. The LG Smart THINQ app allows you to remotely start and even monitor the washing machine progress as well as track the energy consumption and troubleshoot any problems. There is a 2 year part and labour warranty and 8 years on inverter direct drive motor (parts only). The retail price tag is $3,999, so you may need to start saving up now if you want to invest in one of these.

  • Energy Rating: 4 stars (washer) & 2.5 stars (dryer)
  • WELS Water Rating: 4 stars
  • Height: 1340mm

Samsung Dual Load Washer

Samsung has also released a dual tub model – the Flex Wash 16kg/2.5kg washer. The large 16kg capacity drum allows you to do the larger sheets or towels in one load instead of separating into several. There is an ‘Add Door’ feature, which allows you to add any missed items like a lost sock on the way.

There are a number of programs featured with this washing machine including – Bubble Wash & Bubble Soak. The Bubble Wash is stated to pre-mix washing detergent, water and air together at the beginning of a cycle to help create foam bubbles while the Bubble Soak is a pre-wash cycle to help soak the heavily soiled items before the wash begins.

Similarly to LG, you have the capacity to control the washer via an app. The Samsung Smart Washer app has the ability to start the wash, track progress, switch cycles and monitor the automatic Smart Check error system via the Wi-Fi for any troubleshooting. There is an 11 year motor parts warranty on this machine. You can expect to pay close to $3,000 for this machine.

Lemair Twin Tub Washers

  • Energy Rating: 1.5 stars
  • Height: 957mm

Should I buy a dual tub washing machine?

A dual tub can certainly be a convenient way to save you time when doing the washing. It may be worth the investment, in particular for larger households, as it allows you to do two loads at once. With certain models having an additional dryer feature, it further helps to combine two appliances into one, saving you space. The separate smaller tub may provide extra convenience for the small washing loads such as for baby clothes or gym gear.

It would be wise, however, to consider exactly what your washing needs are before purchasing one of these bad boys. If you’re a couple or living on your own, it may not be the best buy with the appliance requiring a larger space compared to your standard washing machine. But if you’re a couple who prefer to wash clothes separately – like the Haier ad – then perhaps its built for you.

The high tech washers come with a high price tag, so you may like to weigh up the pros and cons. There are certain models that only give one tub to wash and the other to dry but nevertheless, save space. As there is a lot of choice in the market, you may like to shop around and find what will suit your washing needs most – whether that is a dual drum washer or something else.

A guide to small washing machines

$
0
0
For apartments or small households, it’s sometimes tricky to find space and use for a full-sized washing machine. However, there is a line of small washing machines designed to be compact and portable. For a household of 1 or 2 people, you’ll be looking for around 3kg-6kg load capacity. Follow our guide for all the specs and features to see if a small washing machine is for you.

Why buy a small/mini washing machine?

A small washing machine is most suited to those living on their own or in apartment where space is at a premium. A small washing machine helps maximise smaller living spaces while maintaining the cleaning power of a full-sized machine. The standard small sized washer is approximately 900 x 550 x 550mm (HxWxD) in size, making them accessible for most cabinet dimensions. For 1-2 people, a smaller washing machine may also help to cut down on electricity and water bills.

No longer will you need to haul up large piles of clothing before doing a load. Even lugging the heavy load to the drying line is an effort when there’s no one around to help. Bigger cycles require more time to wash, while small loads can be cleaned more effectively in a much quicker wash. It’s definitely worth considering if you’re constantly in a rush or just don’t want to be waiting for your clean laundry all day. However, if you do find yourself doing millions of mini-loads, perhaps finding space for a large capacity washing machine would be a better choice.

Small washing machine and dryer combos

When it’s raining or you simply lack space for a drying line, a clothes dryer becomes a necessity. You don’t want to be stuck filling up every single area of your place with wet laundry to air dry. If there’s a lack of space horizontally then a washer dryer combo may be an option. It helps utilise the space to its best capacity without needing to stack up two appliances one on top of the other.

Despite the higher cost, you’re buying two machines in one, so the price may be much less compared to buying a set from certain brands. The washer-dryer machines normally start from 6kg load capacity, still maintaining a small unit size. Most washer dryer combos also don’t require venting, giving you flexibility of where you place it.

How much do small (compact) washing machines costs?

Most small sized washing machines cost between $300 and $650. However, if you’re after a high tech model, these can go up to more than $5,000, in particular for the small capacity washer/dryer machines. You can still find washer dryer combos for as low as $800 nevertheless.

How energy efficient is a compact washing machine?

Small size units aim to be compact and cost efficient. Make sure to check the energy star rating before you purchase to find the one with the highest rating. While you may need to pay a little extra for more energy efficient models, it will cost you less long term.

Who sells small washing machines?

Lemair mini washing machine

The smallest of the lot – more suited for holiday home caravans or camping trips – is the Lemair XQB32 3.2kg Top Load Washing Machine. It has an 850RPM spin speed with four different wash cycles – wash, rinse, spin or gentle. It even lets you select the water level and is claimed to be easy to transport, with just a single water and power connection. It comes with a 1 year warranty.

  • RRP: $499
  • Size (HxWxD): 740 x 410 x 410mm

Euromaid small washing machines

Euromaid has three small washing machines sitting between 5 and 5.5kg in load capacity:

  • Euromaid HTL55 5.5kg Top Load washing machine
  • Euromaid WM5 5kg Front Load washing machine
  • Euromaid WM5PRO 5kg Front Load washing machine

These models seem to represent good value for money with their wide range of programs and high spin speeds of 750RPM, 1,000RPM and 1,200RPM respectively. These fast spin speeds help to decrease the drying time. They also have a quick wash cycle, particularly useful for small loads to save you time and money. The downfall is that all models sit at just 2.5 stars, or lower, for energy efficiency. You may be spending around $98-$164 in electricity every year (according to the Standard Test). There’s a 2 years warranty on the full range.

  • RRP: $549 – $549

Midea small washing machine

Midea produces one model ideal for singles or couples. The Midea MFWS512 5kg Front Load washing machine has eight different wash cycles, including a quick wash. It also has a foam detection system to automatically adjust wash settings if detergent begins ‘oversudsing’.

It’s an entry-level washing machine yet is still equipped with features you find on larger capacity models. It has a 1,200 RPM spin speed and 2 years parts and labour warranty. It can use approximately $117.74 of energy per year.

  • RRP: $599
  • Energy Rating: 2 stars
  • Size (HxWxD): 850 x 595 x 470mm

Simpson small washing machine

Simpson has just one small washing machine – Simpson SWT5541 5.5kg EZI Top Load Washing Machine with a standard 2 year warranty. It features 11 washing programs, including a bedding and a fast wash program. It has cold and hot water inlets to help reduce energy consumption. It’s also equipped with a spin speed of 850 RPM, utilising around $111.07 of energy per year.

  • RRP: $579
  • Energy Rating: 2.5 stars
  • Size (HxWxD): 945 x 575 x 655mm

Fisher & Paykel small washing machine

Fisher & Paykel’s small washing machine has a 5.5kg load capacity with a spin speed of 1,000 RPM. It has a convenient auto-lint disposal system so you won’t have to clean out the lint filter after every wash like with other models. It features a quick wash and an ‘Eco’ option that’s stated to use 25% less water than a regular rinse.

The QuickSmart 5.5kg top loader (MW513) is also boasted for its ‘Smart Drive’ system, stating to adapt the wash action and water levels to help save water and electricity. Nevertheless with its 1.5 star energy rating, it can use around $144.71 of energy per year. There’s a 2 year warranty on this model.

  • RRP: $679
  • Energy Rating: 1.5 stars
  • Size (HxWxD): 1050 x 540 x 560mm

Esatto small washing machine

The Esatto ERLW55 5.5kg Top Loader is another compact washing machine that seems to cater to small households. It’s equipped with eight washing programs and has a spin speed of 700 RPM. According to the standard test, it uses around $116.29 in energy per year and comes with a 2 year warranty.

  • RRP: $549
  • Energy Rating: 2 stars
  • Size (HxWxD): 1000 x 600 x 615mm

Features you should look for in a small/compact washing machine

While most small sized washing machines don’t feature a great deal of high tech features, they still aim to get the job done. Things to look out for with small washers include – high spin speeds and high star energy ratings.

Ensure to measure the space you have available, allowing room for top loaders to open up – otherwise you may need a front loader. Additionally, ensure there’s enough room for washer hoses and dryer vent components to function. If you’re purchasing an additional dryer, the washing machine needs to allow for stacking as there are some that don’t.

Is a small washing machine right for me?

Whether you’re living on your own or wedged for space, a small washing machine may just be up your alley. With many costing less than $600, it can help cut down on costs. In general, large capacity washing machines use more water and energy per wash cycle than smaller models. Depending how often you do the washing, a mini washer can impact positively on you power and water bills.

The small capacity washer dryer combos – although not as compact – are still smaller than buying a set and tend to have more high tech features. These tend to be around the same size as a small washing machine but may have a slightly higher price. Elderly may struggle reaching a dryer that’s stacked on top, so you need to take this into consideration. In will ultimately depend on your budget and washing needs to know which small washing machine is best for you. Compare brands with our customer ratings via the link below.

A guide to humidifiers in Australia

$

0

When the temperatures start to drop and the air starts to get drier – this is when you should start thinking about getting your hands on a humidifier. Whether you’ve caught the season’s flu or itching from dry skin, this appliance can help relieve a number of cold and flu symptoms, as well as physical discomforts. While humidifiers are most commonly brought out during the cooler, winter months, the air conditioning can take its toll on your skin and immune system in the Aussie summer as well. Read on for a full guide on the different types of humidifiers and where you can buy one in Australia.

What are humidifiers?

What do they do? how do they work?

A humidifier is a device that helps to maintain moisture in a room or in the entire home. There are three main types of humidifiers that are available in Australia:

  • Evaporative Cool-Mist humidifiers: use a fan to force dry air through a wet wick filter and water evaporates into the air.
    • Pros: generally don’t emit bacteria into the air and uses little electricity
    • Cons: noisier and require changing of filters every few months (depending on how often you use it)
  • Ultrasonic Cool-Mist humidifiers: use a small metal diaphragm that vibrates, converting the water into a fine vapour (without a filter). These can sometimes leave a white powder around the unit due to dissolved minerals in hard water but it’s not harmful and can be minimised by using distilled water. These are suggested for warm/dry areas.
    • Pros: quiet and uses less electricity
    • Cons: can omit bacteria into the air so it requires frequent cleaning (daily cleaning if you use it often)
  • Warm-mist humidifiers: heat water to boiling temperature and then mix the steam with the air. These are suggested for use in cool/dry areas as they can make the room a little warmer.
    • Pros: quiet and don’t have filters to replace (although some come with an absorption pad to collect mineral deposits, which do require changing)
    • Cons: use more electricity than cool mist humidifiers and can pose a risk of burns as the water in the unit is hot and thus, not suggested to use around children

Humidifier Vs Vaporiser

In essence, vaporisers perform the same basic function as warm mist humidifiers, but these units also heat and evaporate medicine. A vaporiser is ideal for adding warmth to a room during winter. It can also be waterless and use pre-moistened pads, usually infused with particular oils or menthol as medicinal remedies.

Humidifier Vs Dehumidifier

A dehumidifier does the opposite of a humidifier – it removes excess moisture in your home. Both can improve air quality, as well as assist with chest congestion and asthma. However, if your home is too humid, opt for a dehumidifier as it can help reduce mould and mildew build-up.

Why buy a humidifier?

Humidifiers have come a long way since they first hit the market, becoming quitter, as well as easier to use and maintain. Benefits include:

  • Assisting to relieve colds, asthma and allergy symptoms
  • Reduces static electricity in the air so you don’t get a static shock when you sit on the couch
  • Helps sooth dry or itchy skin
  • Snoring partner? Helps ease intensity of the snoring sound
  • Retains heat inside the home with moist air, which can also reduce electricity costs from heating
  • Helps to protect wooden floors, furniture and musical instruments from cracking

Humidifiers for a baby

A humidifier can also be found in a newborn’s nursery. As a baby is more prone to congestion and has skin that’s sensitive to dry climates, a humidifier can help add the moisture back into the air. There are certain precautions that should be considered when buying a humidifier for a child’s room, including burns that could occur with a warm-mist humidifier and the regular cleaning required to prevent mould and bacteria growth.

What size humidifier do you need?

Depending on the size of coverage you require, there are three main sizes of humidifiers to choose from:

  • Portable humidifier: cheapest of the range, ideal for single rooms or travel.
  • Room humidifier: usually portable but heavier to move around. It’s designed for medium to large sized areas.
  • Whole house humidifier: works with your home’s main cooling and heating system. It connects directly to the water line, not requiring any refilling.

It’s important to consider the size of the room you’re aiming to cover. If the humidifier covers a space larger than the room itself, it can leave too much moisture and condensation on windows, increasing the chance of mould. However, if there’s not enough humidity, it can also allow for dry air to damage furniture. Most humidifier manufacturers specify a square metre coverage range of the product, which you should look out for before making your purchase.

Features to look for in a humidifier

  • Low noise levels (generally humidifiers sit under 45dB, which is as quite as a human whisper)
  • Safety features to reduce mould and bacteria build up
  • Design for easy maintenance without hard to reach areas that you’d struggle cleaning
  • Digital controls and user friendliness
  • Easy to refill tank and carry tank
  • Convenience features such as auto shut off when water is emptied (with evaporative cool-mist models you want them to continue running to help the filter dry out, reducing the chance of bacteria growth)

As its main functionality is heating, it does consumer 2000W of power while the humidifiers mentioned above consume around 20W – 30W. Nevertheless you’re getting two appliances in one, so if you require a heater along with a humidifier, than this may be an option for you.

Should I buy a humidifier?

While there are a number of benefits that come with a humidifier, there are also a number of aspects to consider before making the purchase. One of the main downsides of humidifiers is the regular cleaning required to ensure no growth of bacteria or mould. Certain models, such as the evaporative cool-mist humidifiers, also use filters and demineralisation cartridges that require replacing. It would be wise to factor in how often you’ll use the machine and the additional cost you’d incur from replacing these.

Humidifiers are claimed to relieve the downsides of dry air – congestion, sore throats and dry skin. They aim to weigh down dust and allergens, making it difficult for viruses to survive. They’re especially useful during the winter months and you’d hardly notice them in a room, with low noise levels. As there is a wide range available, look at how much moisture the humidifier pumps out, as well as the area it covers before jumping into a purchase decision.

Consumers urged to stop using kettle over scalding fears

American appliance brand KitchenAid has announced a recall of one of its products, citing potential burn risks to consumers.

The brand’s 1.7L stainless steel electric kettle, which retailed at over $200AUD, has been recalled over concerns about the product’s safety, with fears that the handle could detach from the rest of the kettle.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has warned that households should stop using the kettle immediately, with concerns that users could be scalded by boiling water.

Manufactured in China, the kettle has been on sale at several Australian stores, including Myer, David Jones, Bing Lee and The Good Guys. The models affected have serial numbers beginning with YA342XXXXX through to YA724XXXXX. The kettle was on sale between November 2013 and February 2018.

Consumers who have registered their kettle will be contacted, while others should contact 1800 986 190 or visit this website.

Why you need to check for product recalls

The KitchenAid kettle becomes the fourth kitchenware product to be recalled by the ACCC in 2018, with consumers once again being urged to take caution when purchasing and using electrical appliances, and to ensure that products arrive correctly packaged.

Other recent, high-profile, recalls of household appliances in Australia include the Kambrook Essentials Microwave, which was found to be a fire risk due to potential component failure, and Samsung top load washing machines, also thought to be a fire risk.

See the ACCC website for details of all ongoing and historical product recalls.

Stick Vacuum Cleaner Buying Guide

Everyone owns a vacuum cleaner, but the standard vacuum has its limits. Dependable as they are, your trusty vacuum cleaner can’t do everything, and as such new hybrid vacuums are starting to become increasingly popular, bringing greater flexibility to one of life’s most tiresome chores. The latest craze is handstick (or just Stick) vacuum cleaners, which provide and quick and easy vacuuming salutation for busy households. Read on as Canstar Blue reviews handstick vacuums cleaners to help you find the right helping hand for your home.

What is a stick vacuum cleaner?

Stick vacuum cleaners are a sleeker, modern design of the traditional handheld vacuum, and are very handy to have around your home. Their primary purpose is for a quick and easy in-between clean and best suited to reach those hard to reach places. Handstick vacuum cleaners are designed with convenience in mind. They’re cordless and bagless, and their generally lightweight build and slick design means they’re more easily stored and movable than traditional vacuums.

The biggest downside to handheld vacuum cleaners is that they have often lacked the suction power of their bigger cousins – the upright or barrel vacuum cleaner – but things are starting to change, and those seemingly innocuous stick vacuums are starting to pack a punch. You might even find a stick vacuum can completely replace your bulkier existing vacuum, but it’s probably the case that most households will purchase one as their quick and easy ‘number two’ option for those occasions when using the bigger unit is too much effort.

How much do stick vacuum cleaners cost?

Handstick vacuum cleaners can cost anywhere between $50 and $1,000, depending on the model and the brand. Since most handstick vacuum cleaners are less powerful than traditional barrel or upright vacuum cleaners, it’s no surprise that they’re cheaper in most cases. If you’re looking for a budget option, a handstick vacuum can cost you less than $200. However, due to their increasing popularity, some of the leading manufacturers have been making more advanced and innovative designs. As a result, more feature-packed and expensive units are also available.

The most expensive model currently listed on Appliances Online is the Dyson 227265-01 V8 Absolute+, which costs $999, while the cheapest is the Airflo AFV616 Dream Clean, which will set you back a little under $100. The biggest differences between the two models – other than prices – are the number of special features the more expensive Dyson vacuum is equipped with.

Canstar Blue research shows that 45% of Australians have more than one vacuum cleaner and that consumers are spending an average of $338 for each one. Clearly a large number of Australians feel that spending large sums of money on a functioning second vacuum is a worthwhile investment. If you’re one of these people, then you might want to consider buying a more expensive model that comes with additional features and greater power. To help you decide, here is a look at some of the most popular brans on the market.

Stick Vacuum Cleaners

Dyson stick vacuum cleaners

When it comes to vacuum cleaners, Dyson is often hard to beat, and its innovative new handstick vacuums are no exception. However, be prepared to pay top dollar for them! Prices range from $399 to $999, offering a variety of high-tech features including Dyson’s digital motors with acoustic improvements for less noise.

The 227265-01 V8 Absolute+ handstick vacuum is one of its flagship handstick models. It’s equipped with a battery life of up to 40 minutes and boasts two-tiers of cyclone chambers for increased airflow. It comes with an extensive number of accessories including a crevice tool, mini soft dusting brush, combination tool, mini motorised tool, soft roller cleaner head and direct drive cleaner head. Dyson’s V8 Absolute+ model also features a max power mode for up to 7 minutes of high suction power and a HEPA filtration system to capture allergens while you vacuum.

LG stick vacuum cleaners

The South Korean tech giant, LG, is one of the world’s biggest appliance manufactures and also offers a handstick vacuum range. It sits in a similar price category as Dyson, with the LG models being available from around $450 to $999. Its latest model, the A9MASTER2X with Aeroscience Technology, is boasted for an adjustable height with a max height of 1,120mm. Similarly it allows for up to 40 minutes of vacuuming but includes two batteries, giving you double the vacuuming time. If you choose to use the power mode, it will last up to 9 minutes per battery and up to 6 minutes in turbo mode. Other key specs include a 2.7kg weight, 3.5 hour re-charge time and a noise level of 82dB (turbo mode without nozzle), which is about the same loudness that a standard food blender produces.

On the cheaper side of the LG range, you’ll find the CordZero Handstick vacuum. It’s similar in certain aspects, such as its weight and noise levels, and also features a detachable handheld vacuum. It has a run time of 20 minutes in the power mode and 30 minutes in the regular mode, also coming with two batteries, so you can double the time of cleaning. It’s designed with an LED light to see under furniture, a battery level indicator and has a charging time of 4.5 hours.

Electrolux stick vacuum cleaners

Another high profile brand to consider is Electrolux. It equips its vacuums with a number of innovative features and unique technological advancements that help them stand out. Electrolux provides 10 different handheld models in Australia priced around $150 to $300, many of which have very high consumer scores. While its vacuums appear to be heavier on average, they still seem to offer excellent value with nifty features such as the self-standing feature, swivel nozzle and increased suction power.

The Electrolux ZB3230P ErgoRapido 2-in-1 handstick vacuum is specifically designed for removing pet hair with its motorized Fabric Pro Power Nozzle. It features an LED light for cleaning under furniture and has a battery life of up to 45 minutes on just a regular setting. One other model is the ZB3113 Ergorapido 2-in-1 handheld vacuum, which should only cost you around $300 and also offers up to 45 minutes of run time. It is boasted for 180° swivel head maneuverability and low center of gravity design that enables the vacuum to glide across floor surfaces with ease.

Black & Decker stick vacuum cleaners

Black & Decker brings forth several cordless handstick vacuums at the cheap end of the spectrum, roughly around $100 to $400. The Black & Decker SVFV3250LR-XE Stick Vacuum has a 25 minute running time and boasts ORA Technology with a 12 Air-Cyclone system. It also comes with several tools, such as a pet tool, 2-in-1 nozzle/flip out upholstery brush, long crevice tool and accessory storage on the docking station.

Two latest additions to the Black & Decker pack are the 45Wh 2-in-1 Cordless Multi-power cleaners – one designed specifically for pet owners and the other for allergy sufferers. While both feature the same key specs, including the weight (3.85kg) and noise level (76.6dB), the Pet Vacuum cleaner also boasts a removable, anti-tangle beater bar lift, plus a cotton-fresh scent disperses while you vacuum. The Allergy Vacuum Cleaner, on the other hand, is said to have a Dual HEPA filtration system to trap 99.92% of dust particles. Both have a run time of up to 60 minutes and a charging time of 6 hours. These models are also equipped with a battery charge indicator and an LED light to illuminate the floor.

Bissell stick vacuum cleaners

Bissell offers a concise range of high-quality handstick vacuums. Its range sits around the $300 to $500 mark. One such model, the 1047F AirRam Vacuum Cleaner, weighs just 3.7 kilos and can last up to 40 minutes before needing to be charged, which is becoming a fairly standard timeframe across models over the $400 price tag. It allows for swivel steering and under furniture vacuuming with its low profile.

Bissell’s latest model – the 1971F Bolt Max 25V vacuum cleaner – is 2.81kg in weight and claimed to provide up to 40 minutes of vacuuming. It’s designed with a removable handheld vacuum for those hard to reach areas, giving it that 2-in-1 feature. It is boasted for Bissell’s ‘edgeREACH’ technology, claimed to divert suction to the edge of the vacuum with uniquely shaped bristles and provide cleaning all the way to the corner of the room. There are also a number of accessories that come with this model, including a multi surface brush roll, hardwood brush roll and a crevice tool with a dusting brush.

Vax stick vacuum cleaners

The Vax vacuum cleaner range features a pretty extensive line of cordless stick vacuums, ranging from $130 to $300 in price. Its most expensive model, the Vax VX63 Blade Cordless SlimVac Pet Pro Handstick Vacuum Cleaner, boasts up to 45 minutes of vacuuming time with a 4 hour recharge time. However, with its boost mode, it would significantly reduce that time. Nevertheless, it’s still a fairly lightweight model, 2.9kg in total, and is designed with a detachable handheld vacuum. It includes several accessories such as a crevice tool, pet/stair tool and dust brush.

For a simpler handstick vacuum, Vax offers its VX58 Cordless SlimVac 18V Handstick Vacuum Cleaner. While it’s a lightweight model – 2kg in total – it has a run time of up to 20 minutes and a charge time of 8 hours. Nevertheless, you’ll still find the standard features with this model, including a handheld release button and accessories such as a crevice, upholstery and dusting tool, designed to make vacuuming nice and easy.

Stick vacuum cleaners – things to consider

Before settling on a stick vacuum cleaner, there a number of conditions you should take into account. Otherwise, you might end up with the wrong one.

  • Budget: It may be worthwhile to invest in a more expensive model, but obviously this isn’t a good idea if you can’t afford one. These vacuums typically don’t last as long as traditional vacuums cleaners, so you’ll need to replace them every few years or so. Your budget should really be the first thing on your mind when deciding on a handstick vacuum.
  • Your surface type: It’s crucial to ensure that the model you buy fits your home. Handstick vacuums are not suitable for cleaning your entire floor, whether it’s tiled, carpeted or wood. They’re more suitable for small cleaning jobs in hard to reach areas and certain models perform stronger on different surfaces. A lack of suction on certain surfaces will result in dirt and debris being left behind. For the best results, ensure that the model you buy is a fit for your home.
  • Weight: Due to being handheld appliances, you’ll likely be carrying them around a lot to reach those rooms and stairs. Therefore, you definitely don’t want to pick one that’ll give you a hard time lugging it around. Pick a product that is light enough for you to carry easily. Some of the lightest models can weigh as little as two kilograms. Alternatively, getting a heavier one could be a good workout!
  • Battery: For the sake of convenience, handstick vacuums are cordless. This means you’ll want to keep the battery life of your vacuum in mind. Batteries should last for a few years of average use, unless you plan on vacuuming a lot. Eventually though, they will lose their ability to hold a charge. Once the battery dies, it can often be cheaper to just replace the vacuum itself, so make sure you check the warranty on the battery before you purchase. Also consider how long the battery will last for every use – this tends to be up to around 40 minutes at a time.
  • Noise: Being smaller and less powerful than upright vacuums doesn’t mean that handstick vacuums are that much quieter. If noise bothers you when you’re vacuuming, then quitter models definitely exist. It would be best to ask an expert on the Nosie levels before buying.
  • Ratings & Reviews: There are scores of handstick models out there, and sifting through the good and the bad models can be challenging. Online reviews are a good gauge of whether or not a product performs up to standard, and you can also check out our vacuum cleaner customer reviews and ratings to see which of the major brands performed the best overall according to consumers like you.

Special features to look for in a stick vacuum

In addition to the considerations listed above, there are also a multitude of different features that some of the more advanced stick vacuum cleaners come with. Depending on your needs, you might want to consider some of the following common features.

  • On/off switch: This might seem fairly obvious, but a lot of models require you to hold a trigger to keep sucking, which can be a bit of a strain on the old fingers. An on/off switch makes continuous operation considerably easier, especially if you’re a regular cleaner.
  • Wall mountable charging dock: While the stick part of the vacuum requires a battery, the handheld part is often chargeable. A docking station will keep the vacuum fully charged for when you need it, and some mounted bases can even keep all of your other accessories in one place as well.
  • Pet hair functions: Standard tools that come with a handstick are crevice and dusting brush tools, but there are other attachable parts built for specific cleaning purposes. The most commonly used is a pet hair brush. Pet hair is particularly difficult to get out, and you can never really be rid of it entirely, but a pet hair attachment will do a fine job in cleaning up after your furry housemate.
  • Fallout flap: A fallout flap prevents dirt from falling out of the back of the vacuum when you carry it with the nozzle facing downwards. People often do this without realizing it when they move between spaces, do having a fallout flap can stop you from having to do extra work.
  • Filters: Most vacuum cleaner models come with a filter to sort through dust particles. These filters should be easy to remove, replace and clean when necessary. Some models also come with HEPA filters, which are ideal if you have an allergy to dust.
  • Wet and dry capabilities: Not all models are suited to sucking up liquids. But the ones that do can store a relatively small amount (150ml), which makes them perfect for cleaning up quickly after a spill. Be sure to clean the in-built bin and filter after sucking up liquids, and do not fill it past the indicated level.

In addition to the brands mentioned above, there are several other brands out there, such as Airflo, Monster and the likes of Bosch, Hoover and Kogan, that may offer good deals on handstick vacuums, and one of these providers could just have the perfect vacuum for you. So make sure that you shop around before spending the big bucks.

In short, stick vacuum cleaners are a great innovation that can make your life a lot easier. If you have spaces that are hard to reach, or you just don’t like to lug a big vacuum cleaner around, then a stick vacuum is a good option for you. A guide to wet & dry vacuum cleaners

A handy tool for any workshop is a wet and dry vacuum cleaner. It’s essentially a vacuum at heart, but with additional functionality and capacity for more environments both indoor and out. Weather you’ll need one in your home or workspace will depend on your cleaning needs – read on for a full review to find out.

What is a wet & dry vacuum cleaner?

A wet and dry vacuum cleaner is similar to a regular vacuum but with the ability to clean both dry and liquid messes regardless of whether it’s inside or outside the home. Instead of a vacuum bag, it usually has a two bucket system that separates the solids from the liquids. The two separate compartments are also there to make sure that it’s a safe appliance to use with no risk of damage or electric shock. It uses a foam filter for the liquid spills and paper cartridge filter for dry elements, which will need replacing from time to time.

Why buy a wet & dry vacuum?

While wet and dry vacuum cleaners are most commonly used for industrial cleaning such as commercial properties, they’re also versatile enough to be used for your day to day cleaning tasks around the home. Most wet and dry vacuum cleaners have long power cords and are equipped with a number of brushes for different tasks such as cleaning car seats and mats as well as cleaning out grout on tiling. Some other uses of these machines include:

  • Clearing debris, wood shavings or leaves after renovations (with a blower function)
  • Cleaning up different spills from a burst pipe to a bath overflow or simply a bottle of wine
  • Removing water from a blocked sink (with a blower function)
  • Tackling hardwood floors and most kinds of material including curtains (with additional attachments)
  • Emptying water mattresses (most models stop automatically when the tank is full)

What size cleaner do you need?

Depending on the job needing to be done and the size of the mess needing to be cleaned, these aspects will ultimately influence the tank capacity, hose and filter size you go with. If you expect to be clearing out large sized debris you may opt for more capacity. However, for fine debris, a small sized wet-dry vac should suffice. As a general guide:

  • Large size: more suited for the industrial wet and dry jobs as they tend to have the most capacity and power. However, these are heavier and more bulky.
  • Medium size: provides a compact machine while not losing out on performance for a variety of cleaning situations.
  • Small size: are lighter to carry around and easy to store but with a sacrifice on performance and capacity.

There are also three variants of suction hose sizes to choose from. For cleaning large debris, look for a 2.5m hose or above. For small sized debris, you could opt for a hose size between 1.25 – 1.5m, but for something in between a 1.5 to 2.5m hose should suffice, depending on your cleaning needs.

Features to look for:

With a number of wet and dry vacuums boasting various features, there are a number of more general aspects to consider including:

  • Castors and carry handle for convenience
  • On-board accessory mount to save space
  • A blower function that expels air out to push leaves, dust and other debris before gathering it
  • HEPA cartridge filter or HEPA collection bag if you suffer from allergies

Who sells wet & dry vacuums?

Ryobi

Ryobi Tools is one of the world’s largest power tool manufacturers, specialising in a number of power tools from cutting to drilling to woodworking, as well as garden tools. It claims to offer affordable prices for both the hobbyist and craftspeople. At the time of writing, Ryobi offers four models of wet and dry vacuum cleaners, ranging from 20L capacity to 60L.

The Ryobi 20L Stainless Steel Wet Dry Workshop vacuum is claimed to be designed for any workshop and is priced at under $100 at Bunnings. It features a carry handle, four castor wheels and an on-board accessory storage with a crevice tool. It’s equipped with a blower function and an in-built drainage plug for easy maintenance, but it doesn’t feature a water level indicator so you’ll have to keep an eye out to not overfill. With its 20L capacity, it weighs in at around 7.4kg and has a 1.8m hose.

For a large capacity model without the blower function, there is the Ryobi 60L wet and dry workshop vac that is priced around the $300 mark. With additional capacity it doubles in weight (14.5kg) but features large wheels for easy transportation.

Ozito

Ozito Tools has a broad range of power tools and garden products all which are also sold in Bunnings. Since 1993, it has aimed to help both the Aussie and Kiwi home heroes to pursue their passion of DIY at affordable prices, it says.

There are more than five models in the Ozito range, one of which is the 1500W 30L stainless wet and dry vacuum (VWD-1530) for indoor and outdoor cleaning. It features a blower function (with the blower port accessible from the rear of the motor), a water drainage outlet and an accessory mount at the top with a crevice tool for those hard to reach areas. It’s 5.7kg in weight and has a 2.5m suction hose. For easy storage it features a cable bracket, carry handle plus castors wheels.

For something smaller to use around the home, Ozito offers its 1250W 12L stainless wet and dry vacuum (VWD-1212). It’s a similar model to the one above but with a 1.5m suction hose. With a total weight of 2.7kg, it’s an easier model to lug around but if 12L capacity is too small for the job you may want to look for larger models in the range instead.

Karcher

German company Karcher specialises in both industrial and commercial cleaning products. Whether it’s steam mops or heavy duty pressure washers, Karcher has all cleaning areas covered, including wet and dry vacuum cleaners.

An industrial wet and dry vacuum in its armoury is the ‘NT 65/2 Tact²’ cleaner, with 2,760W maximum power. It boasts a large 4m suction hose and castor wheels with brakes as its total weight is 26.5kg. This 65L capacity cleaner is also designed with auto shutdown, a drain hose, and the Tact² automatic filter cleaning system for convenience. Its on-board storage can be used for tools, small items and bottles.

For a domestic wet and dry vacuum, the NT 30/1 Me Classic model is stated to be a practical and robust cleaner with 1,500W of power and 30L container capacity. It’s 8kg in weight and is equipped with a 2.5m suction hose.

Shop Vac

Shop Vac Australia specialises in wet and dry vacuum cleaners, and it aims to continue innovating and advancing its technology, the company says. Being around for over 60 years, it has an extensive range of industrial and commercial use vacuums for heavy-duty cleaning needs. From its handheld rechargeable vac to a large 30L ultra pump vac, Shopvac might have a wet and dry vacuum just right for the job – with some models available at Godfreys.

The Shop Vac Ultra Pump Vac 30L (#58708) is boasted to pump up to heights of 15m at 23L/minute. It’s claimed to be ideal for emptying broken washing machines and flooded basements. It’s equipped with numerous tools, including a crevice tool for any hard to reach areas, gulper nozzle and a round brush.

Another model in the range is the Shop Vac Super 20L 1400 Watt Max Wet/Dry (#59703). This domestic vacuum is designed with blower functionality, ideal for the garage, basement or workplaces both indoor and out. Its on-board tool storage can store the crevice tool, cartridge filter and foam sleeve.

Vax

Vax provides a large range of all things floor care. From numerous vacuum cleaners to a range of steam mops as well as wet/dry vacs, Vax is bound to have a cleaner worth looking into. It offers one Vax Wet and Dry Vacuum Cleaner (VX40) with a blue colour variant (VX49) also available. Both of these vacuum cleaners provide 20L of capacity and are designed on castor wheels. The 1250W VAX wet/dry vacs are equipped with a blower function and crevice tool. Other specs include a total weight of 5.1kg, an 8m power cord and a 1.8m suction hose. These vacuums will likely cost you around $100.

Vax wet and dry vacuum cleaners are offered in a variety of stores including Harvey Norman, The Good Guys and JB Hi-Fi. Other providers of wet and dry vacuum cleaners to look out for include Dewalt, Derni, Makita, Pullman and Work Hero. And if you love your beloved Henry the vacuum cleaner, there’s also Charles the wet and dry vacuum with its iconic face design (pictured).

Should I buy a wet & dry vacuum cleaner?

Before deciding on one, there are a number of factors to consider, such as identifying the exact type of cleaning you’re embarking on. If you regularly clear debris and leaves, you may like to consider one of the models mentioned above that is equipped with a blower function. Furthermore, as cleaning liquids can end up with a smell when the tank is not maintained, an easy to use drain hose is worth considering as one of the main features.

With an average consumer spend of around $300 on standard vacuums, you can find domestic wet and dry vacs for a lot less. However, for industrial wet and dry vacuums, you should expect to pay closer to $500. It would be wise to shop around as there are a number of options available for all types of users. Just make sure that you find a brand and model that meets your specific cleaning requirements and any preferences. Just like corded phones, corded vacuums are now a thing of the past. Dyson is a pioneer in vacuum cleaners – first creating the bagless vacuum and now putting an end to big-corded vacuums forever. With standard cord-free vacuums having limitations relating to run-time and suction power, Dyson is revolutionising the industry with its Cyclone V10 range. But it comes at a high price. Is it worth it? Read on for Canstar Blue’s reviewWhat is the Dyson V10 Vacuum?

The V10 cord-free vacuum is stated to be Dyson’s fastest and most powerful cordless stick vacuum with the suction power of a full-sized vacuum. While standard stick vacuums are marketed towards the small cleaning jobs and hard-to-reach areas, Dyson boasts its Cyclone V10 range as the one stop vac for the whole house.

How does the Dyson V10 work?

The Dyson V10 uses an improved motorised motor that provides a maximum spin speed of 125,000RPM, making it the fastest in the Dyson range and 20% more powerful than the previous V8 model. Its ceramic shaft is boasted to be three times harder than steel but with half the density, giving it a total weight of 2.68kg. While many other brands also boast lightweight models between two to three kilograms, the V10 is half the weight of its predecessor. When compared to the first generation V2 vac, the V10 power to weight ratio has increased over three times.

Rather than an on/off switch, the V10 vacuum uses a trigger to generate extra power. When released, Dyson states it will stop almost instantly. In terms of noise levels, it has several key specs, including:

  • acoustic material to absorb vibrations
  • a post-motor filter that dampens sound
  • “acoustic baffles” to further reduce noise

Noisy or not, the V10 Cyclone cleans up a treat in this Dyson promo video. Though, who actually lets their floors get that dirty in the first place?!

How long does the Dyson V10 battery last?

The V10 “energy-dense” lithium-ion battery has had one more cell added – totalling up to seven. It’s claimed to run at a higher voltage and create more power while maintaining a light weight with smaller sized cells. It also has innate LED system diagnostic and altitude sensors that enable it to automatically optimise output power.

The total run time is claimed to be “up to 60 minutes” (this applies to the powerful suction mode with non-motorised tool attached). Currently, the standard suction time of cord-free vacuums in the market is about 40 minutes for the big name brands and about 20 minutes for the more budget friendly models out there. This time decreases significantly when used on high power modes.

Dyson V10 Design

With Dyson constantly aiming to enhance and improve its products, it’s no surprise that even the slight elements have had a revamp including:

  • Handheld vac: one click transformation to a handheld, allowing you to clean the hard to reach areas, as well as your car. It’s designed with a centre of gravity to help clean up high
  • Whole-system filtration: claimed to have the entire system fully sealed with an airtight gasket and a pressurised rubber seal around the filter to retain dust particles as small as 0.3 microns, ideal for allergy and asthma sufferers
  • ‘Point and shoot’ alignment: allows the 0.77L capacity bin to release content with ease

As demonstrated below, the body of the V10 model has an in-line configuration, stated to help the air draw directly from the top in a straight line, increasing the suction:

Dyson Cyclone V10 Accessories

  • Soft Roller Cleaner Head: large roller covered in woven nylon and anti-static carbon fibre filaments
  • Direct Drive Cleaner Head: features stiff nylon bristles and anti-static carbon fibre filaments
  • Combination Tool: two tools in one with a simple switch – push the bristles up or down
  • Crevice Tool: for precise cleaning in narrow gaps or around edges
  • Mini Motorised Tool: for tight spaces to tackle hair and ground-in dirt
  • Soft Dusting Brush: manoeuvres into narrow gaps and features soft bristles, ideal for dusting furniture and flat surfaces
  • Flexi Crevice Tool: designed to extend and flex in “awkward” gaps, ideal for car cleaning as well in between furniture
  • Extension Hose: extends to 60cm for confide areas including behind cabinets and beneath car seats
  • Accessory Tool Bag: to store tools in one place

How much does the Dyson V10 cost?

There are currently two V10 vacuums in the range – the Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute+ and the Dyson Cyclone V10 Animal. The Absolute+ has a slightly higher price but comes with two cleaner heads and six tools, while the Animal only features one cleaner head and just four tools, reducing the price by $100. The tools included with the V10 Animal are a combination tool, crevice tool, mini motorised tool and soft dusting brush.

  • Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute: $999 (RRP)
  • Dyson Cyclone V10 Animal: $899 (RRP)

That’s a lot of money for a vacuum cleaner, but…

Should I buy the Dyson V10 vacuum cleaner?

If you’re looking for a cord-free vacuum that aims to provide extended run time and powerful suction for the whole house – not just one bedroom, then the Dyson V10 might be one to consider. However, with a price tag of almost $1,000, it may be worth weighing up the cost compared to a standard full-size corded vacuum to see if you really need this latest improvement. While it’s no fun to lug a traditional cylinder vac around the house and re-plug from room to room, you’re bank account may also not enjoy the hit. In due time, we may see more brands jumping on the bandwagon to increase competition and to help decrease the price. But for now, Dyson’s best vacuums command a hefty price.

With this new release, make sure to keep an eye out for sales of previous models, such as the Dyson V8 Absolute. While not as powerful and long-lasting, it still packs a punch as far as handstick vacuums go. You may also like to consider online ratings – such as ours – to see how Dyson competes with other big brands in terms of effectiveness, ease of use and value for money.

LG A9 Handstick Vacuum Review

Cordless handstick vacuums are the future of vacuuming and making the dreaded household chore an easier task, with LG one of the brands leading the revolution. Similarly to Dyson, LG has put an end to corded vacuum cleaners with its full range now cord-free. However, many standard handstick vacuums currently on the market lack in suction power and have limited run-times, so LG’s newest addition – the LG A9 Handstick with Aeroscience Technology – is one to compete with. But is it worth the money? Read on to find out.

What is the LG A9 Vacuum?

A9MASTER2X with nozzle

The LG A9 Cord-Zero handstick is LG’s latest vacuum to be added to the LG pack. It’s boasted for its long run time battery performance and ergonomic design. It is equipped with LG’s Aeroscience system, which refers to LG’s air flow vacuum technology. The system is designed to create mini whirlwinds of air that helps separate dust particles and other allergens. The LG Inverter Motor is stated to then rotate at high speeds to create fast air flow within the vacuum chambers.

How does the LG A9 work?

This latest LG range turns on with a touch of a thumb. The off button and ‘turbo’ mode are also located at the top of the appliance for ease of use. Its five step filtration system is boasted to remove majority of dust particles down to 2.5 microns in size. The finer dust is captured in a dust filter while large particles are deposited into the dust bin. The filter is stated to be easy to clean – simply turn the exhaust cover to separate the filter from the body. Its power drive nozzle rotates the roller while vacuuming, claiming to provide effective particle pick up.

How long does the LG A9 battery last?

The LG A9 comes with a dual power pack – two lithium ion batteries – both of which provide 25.55V capacity. In normal mode without the power drive nozzle, it’s stated to run for up to 40 minutes per battery. With the power drive nozzle, it can provide up to 30 minutes of suction. More budget friendly vacuum cleaners typically have a run time of about 20 minutes.

If using the LG vacuum on power mode, it will only last you up to nine minutes per battery and up to six minutes on turbo mode. The charging time required for each battery is 3.5 hours. In terms of switching batteries, it boasts a quick and easy process where you push buttons on both sides to slip the battery in or out.

LG A9 Design

LG has certainly amped up this latest range compared to its previous. The total weight of the A9 model is 2.7kg (with carpet nozzle). It has an adjustable telescopic pipe, which can be changed to four different lengths for versatility – 880mm, 995mm, 1,035mm and 1,112mm. It also features LG’s ‘Opti-Balanced’ handle with an ergonomic design, boasted to reduce effort while you vacuum for additional comfort. The 0.44L dust bin has an easy-to-empty system with one release button. The design also features a charging indicator, plus a battery remaining indicator.

LG A9 Accessories

  • Carpet Nozzle: large cleaning roller that slides out by turning the bottom lever
  • Hard Floor Nozzle: for delicate jobs such as dirt and loose pet hair
  • Bedding Nozzle: uses a vibrating mechanism to catch dust, ideal for mattresses and bedding
  • Combination Tool: a two-in-one tool that can be adjusted according to the specific cleaning tasks such as laptop and computer keyboards
  • Crevice Tool: ideal for door frames and window frames as well as corners and tough to reach crevices
  • Charging Station: can be stored in three different ways including wall mount, floor standing or compact mode (pictured below)

Versatility of the A9 range

How much does the LG A9 cost?

LG’s A9 handstick vacuum cleaners are certainly at the high-end of the price range. There are currently five models available, with the main differences being that some come with the dual battery pack and others with just one. The most expensive is the Handstick A9MASTER2X, which costs $999.

  • LG Powerful Cordless Handstick A9MASTER2X: $999 (RRP)
  • LG Powerful Cordless Handstick A9MULTI2X: $884 (RRP)
  • LG Powerful Cordless Handstick A9PETNBED2X: $834 (RRP)
  • LG Powerful Cordless Handstick A9MULTI: $749 (RRP)
  • LG Powerful Cordless Handstick A9PETNBED: $699 (RRP)

While it’s a lot of money, it’s certainly one to consider if you’re serious about vacuuming…

Should I buy the LG A9 vacuum cleaner?

Handstick vacuums are revolutionising the traditional vacuuming space. They’re simple to use and are usually lightweight. Competing with the likes of Dyson’s V10 Cyclone Vacuum, the LG A9 features a dual power pack for extended battery life and is designed to be used for a variety of different cleaning tasks, with multiple attachments. Perhaps the next step for vacuums will be to reduce the noise levels with the A9 being slightly above the average vacuum – 82dB (turbo mode without nozzle).

Having a cordless handstick vac may improve your experience of vacuuming – no more re-plugging from room to room or lugging around a heavy barrel. However, the premium price may have you questioning if you really need the LG A9 vacuum. Forget boring white and stainless steel – the newest trend for appliances is black. The sophisticated new look goes well with other black appliances and can even serve as a great talking point that draws the eye in your home. It’s not a look for everyone, but black appliances can offer texture and depth for both the kitchen and laundry room in particular.

Whether it’s a black refrigerator and dishwasher or a black oven and microwave you want to add to your space, there are several brands on board with this colour scheme. The laundry can also have a makeover with several black washing machines now on sale. So, to help deck out your home in the latest trend, we bring you this guide on where you can get your hands on the best, black, appliances in Australia.

Who Sells Black Fridges?

LG Black Fridges

It’s 708L French Door Fridge in Matte Black Stainless Steel (GF-V708MBSL) features LG’s ‘InstaView Door-in-Door’ where the contents inside are illuminated with a simple knock on the glass panel. If you’re after something smaller, the LG 450L Bottom Mount Fridge (GB-450UBLX) boasts a sleek design with anti-fingerprint shiny steel. It has three tempered glass shelves and six door baskets. And similarly to the model above, It’s equipped with a Smart Diagnosis App that troubleshoots any fridgey problems. The recommended retail price tag for this model is $1,299. It has a 4.5 star energy efficiency rating while the 708L model above is only 2.5 stars.

Sharp Black Fridges

Sharp also has several black fridges on offer, including the almost-intimidating Sharp SJXP580GBK 581L Top Mount Fridge ($2,099 RRP) and SJFJ676VBK 676L French Door Fridge ($3,299 RRP). The recommended retail price for the LG top loader is $1,599, sitting in a similar price bracket to the Samsung range.

Should I hop on the black appliance craze?

If you’re looking for a black appliance to complete your look – there’s plenty of choice. And if you want a pop of colour, you could chuck in some ‘fire engine red’ to balance out the black, such as with a bright red fridge or dishwasher. However, with premium price tags, don’t jump straight in without exploring your options. It would be wise to consider energy-efficiency ratings, as well as if the appliance provides all the features you need for your specific needs. Looks are important, but it’s what’s on the inside that really counts…

A Guide to Retro Fridges

The 1950s ‘Retro Style’ is back in town in the refrigerator space. With that also come bright colours – think fire engine red, cool blue, black and even the Union Jack. Perhaps we feel like we’re born in the wrong era or envy our ancestors who had more colourful appliances back in their day. Nevertheless, the range is here with slightly more advanced features than what was available in the 50s, but it comes with a price. Read on for a review of retro refrigerators available in Australia.

Who Sells Retro Fridges?

Smeg retro fridges wide

Smeg Retro Fridges

Smeg is synonymous with the iconic retro-style fridge. It has by far the most variety of colours on offer, from red and yellow to blue and green, as well as simple white, grey and black. There are also several size options available including 473L, 326L, 256L and 135L bar fridges. Expect features such as automatic defrost, quick chill crystal glass shelves and chromed wine racks.

The Smeg 326L, 1950s Retro Style Aesthetic Bottom Mount Fridge (FAB32RBLNA1) has a 3.5 star energy efficiency rating, using 323 kWh annually. The Smeg 473L (FAB50RAW-1) model brings a 2.5 star energy rating and is stated to use 477 kWh each year, which would cost you around $144 in electricity usage, according to the Standard Test.

Prices in the Smeg retro fridge range start from around $1,700 for the small capacity bar fridge and max out at closer to $3,300 for the large capacity models. However, for the special edition 256L capacity 1950s style fridges, expect to splurge out almost $5,000. Smeg is also on board for retro dishwashers, so if it’s within your budget, you can deck out your kitchen in full retro style.

Hisense Retro Fridges

Hisense Retro Fridge

The Hisense 157L bar fridge (HR6BF157R) is said to be a “happy medium”. Part of the Hisense Art series, the range is available in Bull Red, Graphite Black and Burnt Orange, to compliment any space. Features include an adjustable glass shelf, temperature control, as well as a fruit and veg crisper. It’s rated three stars for energy efficiency and comes with a $499 recommended retail price tag. If you’re looking to jazz up an office break room, lounge, or studio – the bright colours of the Hisense retro bar fridge may just do the job.

Husky also offers a range of bar fridges in the retro style. The HUS-RETRO-110 model comes in three different colours – Ivory White, Piano Black and Radiant Red. Gorenje Retro Fridges

Gorenje Retro

Slovenian appliance manufacturer Gorenje offers three different types of retro fridges including:

  • 329L freestanding fridge freezer (ONRK192): $1,999 RRP
  • 260L freestanding refrigerators (ORB152): $1,499 RRP
  • 260L special edition freestanding refrigerators (OBRB152): $1,999 RRP

These bad boys are boasted for features such as the ‘IonAir’ technology designed to emulate the natural process of ionization to keep food fresh and the ‘AdaptTech’ system which is claimed to maintain the optimum temperature in the refrigerator, regardless of how often you open the door. Expect three-star energy efficiency ratings, adding an extra $94 to your annual electricity bill (ONRK192 model based on usage rate of 28.5c/kWh).

Is a retro fridge worth the money?

Before jumping on the retro fridge bandwagon, you may like to consider if the look is more important than functionality. For about the same price as that of a large 610L side-by-side fridge with a water dispenser, you can get your hands on a retro fridge that’s half the size and has minimal features. While looks are important if you’re wanting to glam out your kitchen space with a standout feature, it’s what’s on the inside that really counts. Think about the features you really need and want, in addition to how your new fridge will look in your kitchen.

However, to add a pop of colour to the home, retro fridges might just be the solution. The tip for going with a bright colour is to use it in small doses, balancing the statement fridge with neutral cabinetry in white, black, grey or warm timber. Carpet Shampooers Buying Guide

$
0
0

We all vacuum our carpets, but giving them a good wash from time to time is also important. Deep cleaning your carpet is not really thought about unless you have a rental property and need to do a thorough clean before new tenants move in. However, all carpets have fibres that accumulate unhealthy bugs, so the tool to help is a carpet shampooer. We bring you a guide on all you need to know about these bad boys and what brands are on offer.

What is a carpet shampooer?

Carpet shampooing is one of the oldest methods of cleaning heavily soiled and stained carpets. While a vacuum only deals with loose dirt, a carpet shampooer – also known as a ‘carpet cleaner’ or ‘carpet extractor’ – uses a combination of water, concentrated detergent and suction to lift the deep-down dirt in your carpet. It generates a thick lather of foam and helps to break down dirt particles. It’s commonly used for high traffic areas as well as rugs, but with additional attachments you can also clean car seats.

Steam cleaning vs shampooing carpet

A steam cleaner is another alternative for cleaning carpets. It breaks down dirt through blasting hot water into the carpet, ideal for cleaning mildew and mould. Steam cleaners are typically lightweight and easy to manoeuvre around furniture compared to lugging around a bulky shampooer. However, a shampooer is designed with scrubbing action, so it requires minimal movement on your end.

Should I buy or hire a carpet shampooer?

It’s recommended to deep-clean your carpets once or twice a year. Whether you’d prefer to hire one instead of storing one will depend on your budget, size of the area to clean and how much space you have available to store the bulky appliance. Large capacity shampooers can cost over $1,000. However, it could be a long term investment especially if you’re using it across multiple properties or possibly sharing it with other family members and friends.

Instead of buying, it’s common to hire a professional to do the job or simply hire a carpet shampooer from a hardware store such as Bunnings. It usually costs about $38 to hire for 24 hours and $47 to hire for a weekend, which excludes the cost of detergent. If you split it with your neighbour, that’s less than $25 bucks each! Other hire companies include Britex and Rug Doctor. While hiring could be a practical choice, carpet cleaning does require a lot of time to complete the job, so keep this in mind.

How much do carpet shampooers cost?

Capacity Price
1L – 2L <$100
2L – 3L $100 – $500
3L – 4L $500 – $1,000
4L – 8L $1,000 – $1,500
10L – 50L >$5,000

General guide only

Other costs of carpet shampooers include the cleaning solution, which must meet manufacturer’s instructions. Some detergents may not be good for specific machines. Similar to other cleaning products, a variety of cleaning solutions exist, targeting different cleaning needs from pet smells to deep-down stains. Typically you receive a small sample of a detergent with your purchase but it won’t last you long. Hired carpet shampooers might also have a compartment for a de-foamer/anti-foamer solution to reduce excess foam.

Aspects to consider:

  • Tank capacity: while a large tank may make the appliance heavier, it requires less refilling. A smaller tank, although easier to manoeuvre, may require more frequent refilling. If you have a large area to clean, a bigger tank will be more efficient instead of going backwards and forwards to the sink.
  • Length of power cord: long power cords can save you from constantly re-plugging the machine from room to room. But with water involved safety is also important – you wouldn’t want to trip over a power cord if it’s too long.
  • Weight: generally carpet shampooers sit just under 10kg with lightweight shampooers being easier to manoeuvre.
  • Attachments: depending on your cleaning needs you may like to look out for carpet shampooers that include a hard floor tool, upholstery cleaner for furniture (but check if your specific material allows shampooing) and brush tools to target specific spots. Long hoses may also help to not lug the appliances up and down the stairs.
  • Noise: with noise levels louder than some lawn mowers, some carpet shampooers will require wearing hearing protection such as earmuffs or earplugs that guarantee protection for up to 85 decibels.

Who sells carpet shampooers?

Bissell Carpet Shampooers

Bissell offers a number of carpet shampooers from small portable models to full size machines. The Bissell ReadyClean 20W7F Carpet Washer weighs 5.6kg and is equipped with a 1.89L tank capacity. It comes with a Bissell Rotating DirtLifter Power Brush, as well as a nozzle tool and hard floor tool. The recommended retail price for this cleaner is $239.

The Bissell ProHeat 1858F 2X Revolution Cleaner is the latest addition to the pack. Coming in just under 8kg, it has a 3.7L tank capacity, 6.7m cord length and provides a 27.9cm cleaning path. It’s equipped with a stain brush, bare floor tool and a 2-in-1 spraying crevice tool for the hard-to-reach areas. For a price tag of $599, it’s boasted for the Heatwave technology that maintains constant water temperature. It also features an express clean mode, claimed to have your carpet dry in about an hour. Should I buy a carpet shampooer?

There are a number of factors to consider before purchasing a carpet shampooer. Firstly, it’s important to look at the area you need to clean, as well as the type of home you have – with stairs or pets. There are specifically designed carpet shampooers to address these factors, which you may like to look out for. Some carpet shampooers also have heaters – such as the Hoover Dual Power Max Carpet Extractor – aimed to increase the cleaning efficiency. The upholstery tools can further assist with the result of the clean, targeting specific areas around the home – including mattresses and lounge suits.

Having a carpet shampooer handy is especially useful for spills or pet accidents, but finding the space to store might be difficult. While the prices start at around $100, larger capacity models can reach above $500. As there is an option to hire carpet shampooers, you can certainly test one out before you decide to buy one yourself. Portable Washing Machines Guide

$

0

A camping and outdoor living essential, the portable washing machine is almost a third of the size of a regular washer and can be used almost anywhere. It can save you from packing too much on your next caravan or camping trip and is designed to be lightweight, easy to use and move around. It’s also ideal for a small apartment without a washer/dryer connection. Read on for a review of portable washing machines from Canstar Blue.

Why buy a portable washing machine?

Portable washing machines are able to wash your clothes almost anywhere – and at any time, with no permanent water line required. This small appliance is designed to move easily from a storage area such as the wardrobe to the kitchen or bathroom to hook up to a faucet. The downside is its comparatively small wash capacity, with most portable washing machines only fitting a few shirts and socks.

Single tub vs twin tub

Most portable washers are top loaders, with models being either in a single or twin tub style. Twin tubs have two drums – one washes and the other spins clothes dry. Having dual drums helps the machine to reach faster spin speeds and dry more effectively than a single tub machine. However, this increases the size of the machine, so it will depend how compact you want your portable washing machine to be.

How much do portable washing machines cost?

Typically, portable washing machines cost around $100 – $300, but you could go up to $500 if you want more features and faster spin speeds to accommodate different types of fabric. For those who travel a lot or move home frequently, it might be worth it, otherwise a regular, full-size washing machine might be more effective. If space is an issue, you may like to consider a small washing machine instead.

Features to look for in a portable washer:

  • Tub capacity: sizes range from around 2-5kg and you may like to choose according to how much laundry you expect to wash. The capacity will also influence the amount of water you’ll need, so keep this in mind.
  • Wash cycles: some offer a variety while others may only have one or two. If it will only be used for short camping trips, a couple of cycles may suffice.
  • Controls: some have manual controls, including a knob, while others have digital soft-to-touch buttons with an LED display. The digital control machines typically feature a timer.
  • Water levels: having the ability to choose different water levels allows you to wash different size loads, especially if you only have one shirt to chuck in.
  • Design: castor wheels and handles are ideal for easy transportability.

Who sells portable washing machine?

ALDI Portable Washer

With such a large variety of special buys, ALDI brings in a portable washer. ALDI’s Duo Portable Washing Machine is a top load twin tub model featuring a spinner and a drop down hose. Expect a self-draining system and a timer for convenience. The 2kg wash and spin capacity model is equipped with a bottom mounted agitator to agitate the wash action and spin cycle. Its total weight is 12.4kg and has a 240V AC operation. It was priced $99.99 with a 1 year warranty.

  • Size (HxWxD): 650 x 360 x 560mm

YiREGO Portable Washer

The Drumi by YiREGO is said to be inspired by the frustration of accommodation with communal laundry facilities. It’s the size of a water cooler bottle and weighs 9kg, giving you a washer that could fit almost anywhere. Its small 2.25kg capacity can wash about three shirts, three pairs of socks and three pairs of underwear at once or a single pair of jeans, according to the designers. However, it won’t handle towels or bedsheets.

While it can’t completely replace a full-sized washing machine, it could still be an option for small loads, in particular for areas lacking access to electricity on your camping getaways. Unlike other automatic portable washers, the Drumi uses the manual power of your foot, being designed with a foot pedal to rotate the drum. It’s stated to take two minutes of pumping to wash, another two minutes to rinse and one minute to spin, so you can skip leg day at the gym once you’re done. It’s available to purchase for around $300, but with an additional $65 shipping fee to Australia.

  • Size (HxWxD): 492 x 400 x 416mm

Lemair Portable Washer

Lemair’s most portable washing machine is the Lemair XQB32 Automatic Top Loader Mini Washer. It’s a fully automatic washer with a cold water connection, ideal for caravans, motor homes and holiday even houses. It has 3.2kg wash capacity and a maximum spin speed of 850RPM. There are three water levels to choose from – low, medium and high – as well as four process selections of wash, rinse, spin and gentle. The XQB32 is designed with a stainless steel wash tub, washable lint filter and wash completion alarm, as well as a time display. It’s one of the largest in this guide and will cost you $499 with a 1 year warranty.

  • Size (HxWxD): 740 x 410 x 410mm

Gecko Portable Washer

  • Blue or Black 4kg Mini Portable Washing Machine GPW-4BL ($199 RRP): the 4kg capacity model features three wash programs – normal, delicate and heavy – and can be completed in a 15 minute cycle. Wash settings include sprinkling and spin-dry, plus a self-draining feature. The machine itself weighs less than 6kg.
  • Blue/White or Grey/White 4.6kg Portable Washing Machine GGPW-5RD ($209 RRP): uses a wave pulsator with a 4.6kg tub capacity. It features a 2-in-1 wash and spin program with a timer. It weighs in at 7kg and is stated to complete a wash in 15 minutes. Its total size is 650 x 390 x 420mm (HxWxD).
  • 5kg Twin Tub Portable Washing Machine GPW-6BK ($299 RRP): the 5kg capacity Gecko washer is a top load twin tub pulsator style model, with a plastic body casing. It features three wash programs – normal, delicate and heavy – and is designed with a 1.2m inlet house, plus 0.86m drain hose. It’s the heaviest of the Gecko pack sitting at 12.35kg and is 730 x 650 x 390mm (HxWxD) in size. It requires a 230V 50Hz power source.

Is a portable washing machine right for me?

Evidently, a portable washer doesn’t compare to the energy efficiency and luxury of a full-sized washing machine, but as a replacement for when you’re on the road or lacking space, it might be the way to go. They’re conveniently designed with minimal set-up required and can provide you with a few extra pairs of clean underwear when you need them most. With a number of different types now available, you can even use one without any access to electricity.

There are portable dryers too, designed in the same way as a full-sized dryer – tumble clothes with the addition of blowing heat. However, this would be an additional cost in terms of money and energy, so a simple clothesline may do the trick if you’re only washing a couple of items at a time. Backpack Vacuum Cleaners Guide

Backpack vacuum cleaners provide maximum versatility for commercial cleaning, but can be just as useful in the home. The ‘wearable’ vacuums are designed to make it easy to clean with no barrel to drag around and some are also cordless. We provide a review of features to look out for and brands available in Australia.

Why buy a backpack vacuum cleaner?

The backpack vacuum cleaner is used extensively throughout the commercial cleaning industry, ideal for cafes, shops, restaurants, cinemas, transportation, conference rooms and auditoriums. However, its design – with the freedom of movement – means it is also becoming a popular choice at home.

One of the benefits boasted with backpack vacuums is that it allows users to maintain a more natural posture – with the weight balanced on your back. It also uses side to side movement, reducing arm and leg extension with the back and forth movement that a standard vacuum cleaner requires. Furthermore, with standard barrel vacuums, it’s easy to trip over the power cord – or the barrel itself. However, with this appliance you can wear it on your back, giving you more freedom of motion, as well as having the chord dangle behind you, out of the way. With this increased moveability, backpack vacuums allow users to clean efficiently without lugging a barrel around.

The simple construction also features fewer parts than a regular barrel vac and thus, may decrease the chance of break downs. Not all backpack vacuums are created equal – some are corded and others not. However, although a cordless vacuum might be convenient, it has limited run time, typically around 45 minutes to an hour.

How much does a backpack vacuum cost?

You can find backpack vacuum cleaners from around $400. However, there are also some outliers. Advanced models can be priced at over $1,000, while bargain back-vacs can cost just less than $150. Depending on your intended use – whether it’s for the home or commercial cleaning – you can decide how much you want to invest in one of these cleaning machines.

Features to consider:

  • Weight: it’s important to not put strain on the back or body when using one of these appliances. Some backpack cleaners are more difficult to use and heavy to carry, so lookout for lightweight models around the 4kg mark.
  • Filtration/Dynamic filters: some models come with HEPA filters to absorb allergens and dust particles.
  • Design: the backpack vacuum should sit comfortably enough to be hardly noticeable, so look out for an adjustable harness to suit different users. The design should allow easy transportation, especially if you expect to be using it for stairs or over long distances.
  • Noise: with the backpack sitting right behind, it’s important to consider how much noise you can tolerate before you purchase a specific model. Most backpack vacuums produce around 60dB of noise.

It features a 15m detachable cable, 5L dust bin capacity and can be used with or without a vacuum bag. However, a vacuum bag is recommended to preserve the life of the motor. It comes with a fixed vacuum rod and flexible hose. This model sits above the $400 mark while the PV900 mentioned above is around $350.

Is a backpack vacuum cleaner right for me?

While backpack vacuums are especially handy for commercial cleaning, you may also consider one for your home. For day-to-day use, you may like to look for a back-vac that’s lightweight, has even weight distribution and noise levels kept to a minimum. Additionally, it’s just as important for the machine to provide sufficient power for effective cleaning and a large dust bag to avoid frequent changing. There are bagless options available to save yourself on dust bag costs such as with the ALDI Backpack vacuum.

Typically, consumers spend around $300 on a standard vacuum, and backpack vacuums sit in a similar price bracket, making it a choice to consider. With the kitchen often being the central hub of the household, as well as an area for entertaining, the aesthetic and layout of your kitchen is important. From the lighting, the functionality of the space and what appliances you choose to fill your kitchen with all impact on how well your kitchen works, which is crucial if you have a large household.

With the modern kitchen designed to be sleek, stainless steel appliances have grown in popularity over recent years, with the shiny finish able to complement many kitchens, regardless of the current colour scheme. With the added benefit of being easy to clean, stainless steel appliances have worked their way into many Aussie households, particularly when it comes to fridges. If you’re thinking of buying one for your kitchen, read on to find out what options are available.

Stainless Steel Fridges

From top mounted fridges to integrated models to French Door series, Fisher & Paykel has it all, regardless of the household size.

Fisher & Paykel’s most popular models, the ActiveSmart range, would be suitable for larger families, with a capacity of more than 600L, as well as coming with plenty of helpful features and functions to keep your weekly shopping trip fresh and ready to be eaten. Fisher & Paykel’s top and bottom mounted fridges are generally the cheaper models within the range, if you’re a bit price conscious.

Hisense

Another brand with plenty of stainless steel fridges on offer for consumers, Hisense may not be as well known as the other brands on this page, but don’t let that put you off from the Chinese manufacturer. Many of Hisense’s popular fridges include frost-free functionality as well as adjustable shelves, humidity controlled climates, as well as an LCD display panel on the higher-end models, allowing users to get the best out of their fridge, regardless of what food types they store. Hisense models are available at a number of Australian appliance retailers.

Kelvinator

Founded in America, Kelvinator has long been an icon in the refrigeration business, with over 100 years of operation under its belt. Prioritising simplicity over variety – not necessarily a bad thing – Kelvinator may leave some consumers wanting over its range, but others will prefer the back-to-basics designs on offer.

Available in both top-mounted and bottom-mounted models, Kelvinator offers capacities between 231L and 536L, with the top-mount range more extensive. Other features from the company include Spillsafe glass shelves, FlexStor door storage, as well as frost free technology to ensure that none of your food is ruined. While known for its appliances and electronics, regardless of the finish, many consumers turn to LG for their home appliances, meaning you’ll likely be in safe hands with the South Korean company.

LG’s fridge range includes integrated models, French door and side-by-side models, as well as the more traditional models, all of which are available with a variety of added features and functions, all built to keep your fridge clean and fresh. For those after something a little fancy, LG also provides models with Door-in-Door functionality, as well as LED control panels to create user-friendly fridges.

Additional functions include water and ice dispensers, as well FlexSpace and FlexStore functions helping you fit the grocery shop in without squishing any fruits or veggies. Certain models also contain a lockable FamilySafe compartment, as well as a drinks chill timer alarm, helping those who like to entertain.

Is a stainless steel fridge worth the money?

With the main drawcard of a stainless steel appliance being the sleek look and the easy cleanup, whether or not you decide to deck your kitchen out with a stainless steel fridge will be entirely up to you. While others may consider the finish and colour to be the least important factor for purchasing a new product, others may feel different and prioritise the finish in order to create a certain aesthetic within their household. As a result, choosing a fridge is a very individual choice.

Regardless of which camp you fall into, it’s best to do your research first, as you may find some brands better suited to your household in regards to energy-saving technology, as well as capacity and extra features.
